Here, the authors investigated the ability to use fruit peels to help soil retain moisture, a property that is essential to agriculture. Across a 96-hour observation period, orange, banana, and kiwi peel water emulsions were evaluated for their effects on soil moisture. They found that orange peels retained the most moisture, but banana and kiwi peels also offered improvements over their control sample.

The Effects of Micro-Algae Characteristics on the Bioremediation Rate of Deepwater Horizon Crude Oil

The Effects of Micro-Algae Characteristics on the Bioremediation Rate of Deepwater Horizon Crude Oil

Environmental disasters such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill can be devastating to ecosystems for long periods of time. Safer, cheaper, and more effective methods of oil clean-up are needed to clean up oil spills in the future. Here, the authors investigate the ability of natural ocean algae to process crude oil into less toxic chemicals. They identify Coccochloris elabens as a particularly promising algae for future bioremediation efforts.

Dietary calcium intake and lead body burden in U.S. adolescents

Dietary calcium intake and lead body burden in U.S. adolescents

We investigated whether dietary calcium intake affects how adolescents handle lead internally. Using paired blood and urinary lead data, we assessed whether calcium status is associated with differences in lead clearance. The results point to subgroups of adolescents—particularly those with lower calcium intake—who may carry a higher internal lead burden than their blood levels alone would suggest.

The effect of pH levels on the growth rate of diatoms

Here the authors investigated how climate change-induced ocean acidification may impact harmful micro algae such as diatoms that produce large amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere and serve as important food sources for other marine organisms. They evaluated diatom growth rates at current seawater pH levels (8.1) alongside reduced pH levels (7.5 and 6.8). The findings indicate that while diatoms maintain steady growth under moderate acidification (pH 7.5), severe acidification down to pH 6.8 significantly limits their ability to adapt and thrive.

Optimizing website performance: A comprehensive Google Lighthouse study on desktop and mobile modes

In this study, we examined the consistency and dependability of Google's Lighthouse tool for measuring website performance, accessibility, SEO, and best practices. Tests conducted on three websites showed that performance scores vary based on the testing mode and website complexity, while other audit categories stay constant. These results provide direction for researchers and developers by highlighting Lighthouse's benefits and drawbacks.
