Investigating the effects of PVC microplastics on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris

This study examined the effect of varying PVC microplastic concentrations on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris in freshwater, utilizing six PVC levels and identical culture conditions. Cell counts revealed that higher PVC concentrations consistently reduced algal growth, and a Spearman correlation test detected a significant negative monotonic association between PVC concentration and viable cell density. These results support the hypothesis that PVC microplastics impair algal growth, underscoring their ecological risk in freshwater environments.

Effects of plant-derived smoke water on germination and growth in stressed plants

Here the authors investigated the potential of plant-derived smoke water to mitigate the negative impacts of abiotic stressors, such as heat, salinity, and water fluctuations, on the germination and growth of various agricultural crops. Their findings suggest that smoke water, specifically from buckwheat, pea, and radish, significantly improves plant resilience against drought and excessive water stress, offering a viable strategy to bolster food security in the face of climate change.

Development of selective RAC1/KLRN inhibitors

Kalirin is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) for the GTPase RAC1, linked to schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s Disease. It plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity by regulating dendritic spine formation and actin cytoskeleton remodeling, which are essential for creating new synapses. Authors developed two novel compounds targeting kalirin, confirming that predictive modeling can indicate biological activity.
