Using machine learning to detect outliers of red clump stars

Machine learning offers a powerful way to analyze large astronomical datasets and identify stars with unusual properties. In this study, students used Extreme Gradient Boosting and Isolation Forest models to investigate why some red clump stars deviate from their expected luminosities. Their results show that stellar age plays a much stronger role than metallicity in driving luminosity variation, and the models successfully detected outlier stars that may affect distance measurements in galactic studies.

Mitigation of ultraviolet solar radiation involving calcite

Mitigation of ultraviolet solar radiation involving calcite

This study tested whether calcite, a safe and naturally occurring mineral, can block ultraviolet (UV) radiation when used in solar geoengineering. Students launched a high‑altitude balloon carrying UV sensors and calcite‑coated sheets to measure how much UV light passed through different calcite concentrations. Their results showed that calcite significantly reduces UV transmission, suggesting it may be a promising material for future stratospheric aerosol injection to help mitigate climate change.

Understanding the impossibility of machine learning fairness with data examples

Understanding the impossibility of machine learning fairness with data examples

Machine learning systems are often expected to make fair decisions, yet the most widely used fairness criteria—independence, separation, and sufficiency—cannot generally be satisfied at the same time. In this study, students tested these criteria using a logistic regression model on a real-world student performance dataset and found that each criterion was met only at different prediction thresholds, with no threshold satisfying all three simultaneously. These results illustrate the inherent trade-offs in algorithmic fairness and highlight why achieving perfectly fair machine learning models is often impossible in practice.

Retinal biomarkers for the detection of neurological disease using deep learning

Retinal biomarkers for the detection of neurological disease using deep learning

The authors looked at whether retinal features, specifically lens clarity, optic nerve cupping, and hyperreflective foci, can serve as biomarkers for neuro-ophthalmological diseases, which share pathological mechanisms with neurodegeneration and may indicate broader neurological risk. Using multimodal clinical data and machine learning, they investigated the potential of retinal imaging as a complementary diagnostic tool for more accurate and accessible detection of neurological disorders.

Legacy mercury, reservoir dynamics, and dredging effects on methylmercury in San Francisco Bay

Legacy mercury, reservoir dynamics, and dredging effects on methylmercury in San Francisco Bay

This study analyzes over two decades of monitoring data (1999-2022) to investigate how legacy mining, reservoir water releases, and dredging activities influence toxic methylmercury (MeHg) levels in San Francisco Bay. The findings reveal a significant delayed correlation between river flow and San Francisco Bay MeHg, and counter to the authors' hypothesis, a strong association between increased MeHg concentrations in the bay and both total annual dredging volume and beneficial sediment reuse / upland sediment disposal.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Standards and Financial Performance in Vietnam’s Media Sector

In this study, the authors examine the relationship between ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors on financial performance of Vietnamese media companies, as measured by ROA and ROE. They find that ESG is positively correlated with financial performance, as is sales growth. They also find that financial leverage is negatively correlated with ROA. Overall, this is a quality study, although the methods section requires more detail.
